BR Standard Class 4MT No. 80079: A History of Preservation and Display
BR Standard Class 4MT No. 80079 is a 2-6-4T tank locomotive built in 1954 at Brighton Works. Initially serving various regions during its operational career, it was withdrawn from British Railways service in 1965. Saved from being scrapped, the locomotive was purchased from the Woodham Brothers scrapyard in Barry by the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) in 1971.
Following extensive restoration, 80079 entered service on the Severn Valley Railway in 1977. It became a popular feature on the heritage line, operating until 2002, when it was withdrawn for an overhaul. Since 2008, the locomotive has been on static display at The Engine House in Highley, serving as a reminder of Britain’s steam-powered railway heritage.
In December 2024, 80079 was photographed on the turntable at Barrow Hill Roundhouse, suggesting it had been relocated from its long-standing display at Highley.
As of January 2025, no public announcements have been made regarding restoration or overhaul work for 80079. The locomotive remains a static exhibit, with no confirmed plans for a return to operational service.
